One practical tip: I’d read that it was helpful to bring colónes, so we exchanged some ahead of time. However, once there, nearly everyone preferred USD, and some activities even offered discounts for paying cash. ATMs in La Fortuna (we used Banco Nacional) worked well for withdrawing both USD and colónes—just keep your bank’s daily limit in mind.
